Teotihuacán, City of the Gods

Treasures from the most important archaeological site in Mexico.
Teotihucán was a great metropolis in pre-Colombian Mesoamerica. For centuries, the city was a political, economic and religious center of the first order.

Recent archaeological discoveries in the city of Teotihuacán, in the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, make this show organized by Obra Social 'la Caixa' even more interesting.

Visitors to this exhibition will be able to see over 400 pieces of art and artifacts that reflect the everyday life and religion of this enigmatic civilization. Monumental architectural elements, vessels and filigree figures, masks, statues of divinities and zoomorphic representations, as well as examples of murals with traces of their original polychrome.

Teotihuacán was, from 100 B.C. to 650 A.C., the first and most influential metropolis in America, with a population that reached 160,000. When the Aztecs discovered the city in ruins a thousand years later, in the 14th century, they gave it the name Teotihuacán, which means 'where the gods are born', and located their creation myth here.

This major archaeological site is 50 kilometers north of what is now Mexico City and is the most visited historic monument in the country. The incredible wealth of this site, which has yet to be completely discovered, is good evidence of what Teotihuacán was like.
